The way APAC trading firms hire technology talent has fundamentally changed.
A few years ago, a Hong Kong or Singapore-based trading firm searching for a C++ engineer would typically begin and end its search locally. Today, the same search often extends across London, New York, Chicago and Europe.
The reason is simple: the specialist talent required to build and maintain modern trading platforms is increasingly difficult to find within individual APAC markets.
Based on our recruitment activity across Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, approximately 75% of candidate submissions for APAC trading technology roles now involve relocation.
This shift reflects a broader change in the market. Firms are no longer simply hiring software engineers—they are competing globally for professionals with direct experience in live trading environments, production systems and high-performance technology.
The biggest change we've seen is the move away from generalist engineering hiring.
Many buy-side firms are now looking for highly specialised professionals who can contribute immediately, including:
C++ low-latency engineers
Quantitative developers
Trading systems engineers
Market data specialists
High-performance infrastructure engineers
These profiles require a combination of technical expertise and financial markets experience, which means the available candidate pool is significantly smaller than traditional software engineering markets.
No single APAC city currently has enough depth of this specialist talent to support growing demand.
APAC firms are no longer competing purely against regional salary expectations.
Many employers are now benchmarking compensation against global markets, particularly the US and Europe.
For candidates relocating to markets such as Hong Kong and Singapore, the combination of competitive compensation packages and regional tax advantages can make relocation financially attractive.
In some cases, candidates may achieve a meaningful improvement in their overall financial position compared with remaining in London or New York.
Across APAC, financial technology investment continues to expand.
As firms build out:
Quantitative research platforms
Trading infrastructure
Execution systems
Data platforms
AI-enabled technology capabilities
the demand for specialist engineers continues to exceed the available local supply.
This means companies relying solely on domestic hiring pipelines risk missing out on the candidates needed to support growth.
Historically, relocation was often viewed as a barrier for both employers and candidates.
That has changed significantly.
Many firms now provide structured relocation support, including:
Visa sponsorship
Temporary accommodation or furnished housing
Sign-on bonuses
Compensation buyouts
Assistance with relocation logistics
Packages ranging from USD $25,000 to $100,000 are becoming increasingly common for highly sought-after technology professionals.
The more directly a role impacts trading performance, the more global the recruitment search becomes.
These remain among the most competitive roles in the market, with many searches extending internationally due to limited local availability.
Quant developers who combine software engineering ability with market knowledge continue to attract strong demand across APAC.
Engineers responsible for execution platforms, exchange connectivity and core trading infrastructure are increasingly recruited globally.
Competition remains high for engineers supporting critical production environments, particularly where reliability and performance are essential.
These positions remain more likely to be filled locally, with less reliance on international relocation.
The strongest candidate pipelines continue to come from established financial technology hubs, including:
London and Europe
The United States
China
India
Many candidates relocating to APAC already have experience working within sophisticated trading environments and can provide immediate value to employers.
Although relocation has become more common, it is not without challenges.
Visa processes remain an important consideration, particularly for senior hires and candidates moving between different jurisdictions.
As candidates become more senior, personal circumstances often become a larger factor in relocation decisions.
Financial incentives may be attractive, but long-term lifestyle considerations can influence whether a move is successful.
Markets such as Hong Kong and Singapore require carefully structured compensation packages to ensure relocation delivers a genuine financial benefit after housing and lifestyle costs are considered.
For firms hiring production-critical technology talent, local-only recruitment strategies are becoming increasingly limiting.
The organisations successfully securing the strongest candidates are those that:
Search internationally from the beginning
Offer competitive global compensation
Provide structured relocation support
Understand candidate motivations beyond salary alone
The competition for specialist trading technology professionals is no longer regional—it is global.
For candidates with strong production experience across C++, quantitative development and trading infrastructure, opportunities across APAC continue to grow.
At Tribus, we support trading firms across Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia with specialist technology recruitment, helping organisations access global talent pools and build high-performing engineering teams.
